Editorial and strategy

I love writing and editing. I also love working on projects to create long-term change.

I’ve been an editor at the Guardian, led on transformational web projects, and developed strategies to make content more consistent and effective. I’m collaborative, user-focused and an absolute stickler for following a style guide.

“Traffic boomed under Ruth’s editorship, reaching a million page views every month.”

Judy Friedberg, former Universities Editor at The Guardian

My content strategy and editorial work includes:

  • Pitching and co-leading on Action for Children’s first ever content strategy.

  • Co-leading on a website redevelopment project: agile working, project management, stakeholder engagement, content strategy, delivery.

  • Running workshops to create content principles, to identify UX research priorities, and improve ways of working.

  • Creating content governance documents and style guides to improve content quality.

  • Writing tone and voice guidance based on user research for charity microsites.

  • Content audit and recommendations for improving content on a charity website.

  • Editor and commissioning editor for The Guardian’s Teacher Network.

  • Commissioning editor at The Chartered College for Teaching.

  • Copywriting for agencies like Winkreative, John Brown, August Media, Sunday, Cedar, Think, River, Ink and Seven.

  • Sub-editor at Nursery World magazine and a range of other magazines and agencies

  • Managing and mentoring a digital content team, including social media and website content.
